MAIN INTERNET GATEWAY
5.14.07 Outage: - A strange combination of issues caused our diverse Internet feeds to experience problems today. At 3:00p.m., our backbone to Atlanta GA went down after a main Fiber cut occurred in soutwest VA. Shortly thereafter, a water main burst in Philadelphia (originally reported to us as a fire) caused the CO Hub in Philadelphia to have to be shut down due to electricution risks to the utility workers. This caused outages on our backup Philadelphia backbone.
UPDATE: The Fiber cut has been repaired as of 8:15p.m. this evening.
Normally, the Fiber cut would have gone unnoticed to our customers as our Philadelphia backbone route picks up the traffic routing (and this was actually the case for approx. 30 minutes after the Fiber cut this afternoon and before the water main break.) The water main break just happened to occur at our backup backbone Hub. Not that is any conselation but the Fiber cut affected businesses, municipalties and other National Internet Services statewide as the Atlanta backbone is a major pipe for much of Tier 1 traffic leaving the state.
UPDATE: Philadelphia CO Hub back on-line at 2.15a.m. 5.15.07
